Former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Reneilwe ‘Yeye’ Letsholonyane has explained how the Mamelodi Sundowns spine helps the national team at the current Africa Cup of Nations.
Letsholonyane, who is currently doing his coaching badges and was recently relieved of his role as DDC coach by AmaZulu, has made 54 appearances for the national team himself.
He has now discussed the importance of Sundowns’ players for Bafana, after the team qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, sending favourites Morocco packing.
“It helps that our teams play in those competitions because now it is paying off in the AFCON,” he said on Radio2000’s Game On.
“Having Sundowns players on the field gives us an edge over other teams. They help us to control other players’ emotions, they help us to control the game more.
“The experience of slwoing games down when it’s too fast. The experience of Teboho Mokoena, putting the foot on the ball when it’s too fast, allowing people to relax, slow the game down when we have to.
“So they are very key.”
Bafana return to action on Saturday when they will take on Cape Verde in the final quarter-final at 22:00.
Reneilwe letsholonyane belives that Bafana Bafana can reach the finals of the Africa Cup Of Nations only if they are consistent.
