One of Kaizer Chefs’ senior center backs, who has fallen short of the team’s expectations, may soon be cut loose.
Chiefs are lagging in sixth place in the DStv Premiership after not having the best of seasons thus far.
The Chiefs team has given up too many goals while shooting blanks, suggesting that Amakhosi has had difficulty striking a balance between attack and defense. Zitha Kwinika was one of the players who was trusted to stop the goals when he returned last season.
Before receiving one or two lifelines at full back last season, the right-back turned center-back lost his spot in the starting lineup of the team.
Given that the Chiefs signed two center backs this season, Kwinika’s experience has not improved. He was replaced in the starting lineup by players such as Given Msimango and Thatayaone Dithlokwe.
Additionally, when he has been healthy this season, Reeve Frosler has held down the right back position. That Njabulo Ngcobo has been chosen as the rotation or substitute option ahead of him only makes the former Stellenbosch FC player’s suffering worse.
And now Soccer-Laduma claims that this might mean Kwinika’s time with the Chiefs is over.
“His future (at Chiefs) at the moment is a blur. It’s really not clear. The club wants to release him because they have a number of defenders in that position. You know the signings of Given Msimango and Thatayaone Ditlhokwe have changed things a lot and Edmilson Dove’s involvement in the central defence has also put more pressure on Zitha (Kwinika) and they don’t want to be keeping a player on a good salary without him playing, Then even if they want to use him as a right back they have players who are better than him in that position. It’s a tricky situation for him,” said one source.
“He has almost a year and a half still remaining on his contract and the other option is to let him compete with those other defenders and see if he can play until at the end of his contract. But as it stands it’s not a done deal yet as they are still discussing about his future. So it will also depend if they can find a team for him on loan or if there is a team interested in him then things will work out faster than expected. But his future hangs in the balance right now,” said the second source.
