Kaizer Chiefs defender Edmilson Dove has discussed the fact that he will be the only Amakhosi player at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Dove, 29, made the final Mozambique squad as the Mambas return to the tournament for the first time in 13 years.
He has represented his country 36 times so far, but he will be the only Chiefs player at the upcoming tournament in Ivory Coast – saying he would’ve loved to see more of his teammates at AFCON.
“We didn’t start the season as well as we would have wished,” he told his club’s media team.
“But I think we have been steadily picking up the pieces and ended the year on a high, so now we want to go into 2024 with the same momentum.
“I would have liked to see some of my teammates called into the national team.
“But at the end of the day, the coach is the right guy to decide who he wants to pick. I want to wish South Africa well and hope they do their country proud.”
Mozambique were drawn in Group B, alongside Egypt, Ghana and Cape Verde, but Dove insisted his team want to show what they are made of.
“It is the first time we have qualified for 13 years, so it is a big opportunity for us to do our best,” he added.
“I have been with the national team since 2014 and it is always an honour to represent my country.
“For some of us who are getting on a bit, it might be our last chance so it is a good platform for every player to showcase his talent.”
The Mambas kick off their tournament on Sunday, 14 January when they will face record champions Egypt.
Edmilson Dove is one of the best left backs in the Dstv Premiership at the moment and he is one of the most consistent players for Kaizer Chiefs Football Club.
