Keagan Dolly could end up for Kaizer Chiefs in a similar situation as they lost Khama Billiat as a free agent at the end of the previous season.
The controversial period of uncertainty that ended with Billiat running away from the team after they had offered him a new contract caused the former Zimbabwean international to leave Chiefs.
The Chiefs reportedly made Billiat an offer for a new contract, but it was on lesser terms. This made sense because the player, who was among the highest paid in the league, had not only struggled to maintain fitness but had failed to lead the team to any trophies.
Ultimately, he participated in just one game for the Glamour Boys during the latter half of the previous season. Now, it appears that his tale at the club is similar to that of Dolly, his former Mamelodi Sundowns teammate.
At the start of the 2021–2022 season, Dolly joined the Chiefs with great fanfare. His signing also brought an end to the notorious CBD partnership, which at Sundowns included him, Leonardo Castro, and Billiat and had disastrous results.
But after a strong first season in which the star from Johannesburg scored seven goals and five assists in 26 games, and an injury-plagued second season in which he scored five goals and provided four assists in 25 games, he has since found it difficult to stay healthy for the current campaign.
Dolly has only been able to make four appearances for the Chiefs thus far, and he has no goals or assists to his credit. The tricky thing is that this season also happens to be his final one with Amakhosi under his current contract.
The authorities at Naturena may now be trying to persuade him to accept a worse contract in order for him to stay on, according to Soccer-Laduma.
“The Khama Billiat situation is repeating itself with Dolly. The club is looking at his fitness and salary situation while negotiating for a new deal. What happened to Billiat may happen here again where the club is looking at downgrading his salary using his injury situation as an excuse. But as I have said before, the talks are continuing and it’s not 100% clear what will happen at the end of the day. Will they wait until late like Billiat or solve the situation while there is still time? That’s where they are now,” said the source to the publication.
