Kaizer Chiefs need a new left-back desperately, but it appears that one of their top targets may be eluding them.
At the conclusion of the current season, Sfiso Hlanti’s contract will expire. There is a one-year option for the club to extend it, but there is no guarantee they will. Hlanti is among Naturena’s highest earners, and the senior management doesn’t think his stay should be prolonged, according to a Phakaaathi source.
Hlanti’s future, though, might hinge on the club’s ability to find a worthy successor to take on Happy Mashiane. Fawaaz Basadien, the player from Stellenbosch, has been mentioned a lot.
Fawaaz Basadien, a 27-year-old left back who has been linked to Kaizer Chiefs, is reportedly in contract negotiations with Stellenbosch to prolong his current agreement, according to a number of local reports.
“Stellenbosch FC have confirmed they are currently in talks with left-back Fawaz Basadien over a new long-term contract, amid interest from Gauteng,” SABC’s Mazola Molefe reported.
“According to information gathered by SABC Sport, the former Moroka Swallows defender has attracted the attention of Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs, although the big guns have not initiated any formal bids just yet.
“We’re in positive discussions with him to renew on a longer-term, but we do have him secured for another 18 months at this stage,” said the club’s CEO Rob Benadie.
Rumors also suggest that Amakhosi has joined the Buccaneers in the competition to sign left-back Riaan Hanamub of AmaZulu FC.
