The 28-year-old left-back Divine Lunga of Zimbabwe has allegedly asked to leave Mamelodi Sundowns during the January transfer window.
Since joining the team from Golden Arrows in 2021, Lunga has only made eight starts, and he is not happy with his current circumstances. Lunga has not played this season despite being loaned back to Arrows for 2022–2023.
Despite being fully fit, Rhulani Mokwena is not including him in the playing squad. Lunga is reportedly pushing for his release from the Brazilians in January, according to the local newspaper Soccer Laduma.
He desires to be let go by the team or sent on loan. Lunga is searching for a new challenge and more playing time elsewhere.
Lunga is a regular for the Zimbabwe national team, having participated in the World Cup qualifying tournament in 2023 and the Africa Cup of Nations in 2022.
Being one of the best left-backs on the continent, he might draw interest from other South African or international teams. The defending DStv Premiership champion Mamelodi Sundowns would suffer a blow with Lunga’s departure.
In addition to playing defense, Lunga is a dependable and adaptable winger or wing-back. He has helped the team succeed with his speed, crossing ability, and defensive prowess.
Mokwena would have fewer options at the back with Lunga out of the picture, particularly considering the likelihood of suspensions and injuries.
Since Lunga has a contract with Sundowns that expires in 2025, the team may ask for payment for his services. Lunga wants to leave the club, so Mokwena has to decide whether to grant his wish or convince him to stay. Lunga will need to consider his options and make the best decision for his professional future.
