Ronwen Hayden Williams (born 21 January 1992) is a South African professional soccer player who plays as a goalkeeper for Premier Soccer League club Mamelodi Sundowns and captains the South Africa national team.
On 21 July 2022, Williams signed with Mamelodi Sundowns after a 12-year career at SuperSport United. He made his debut in the 2022/23 opener against Cape Town City FC where he made a string of great saves and kept a clean sheet.
Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has made it known he was only interested in joining the Tshwane giants.
This is despite the Bafana Bafana international having been linked with two of the biggest football clubs in the country, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates during his days with SuperSport United.
“There were always rumours about me joining Orlando Pirates or Kaizer Chiefs, I told SuperSport United boss Stanley Matthews the only club I wanted to join was Sundowns.” Williams told Marawa Sports Worldwide.
Williams claims that the Sundowns players in the Bafana Bafana camp were sufficient in luring him to Chloorkop.
“Everytime I played against Sundowns, it was so difficult. Training with their players in the national team, you could see the level was much higher. The talks they had as well, they didn’t talk about winning the league but they talked about winning the Champions League and it was crazy to see where their mental space was,” Williams said, quoted by the Citizen.
“They were looking to break barriers and I wanted to be there and I wanted to be a part of it. Just the way they do things is a crazy level. To see them year after year challenge to win the Champions League is tough.
“We have a technical team that believes that we can achieve things and win the Champions League and play at the Club World Cup and break records,” Williams added.
