Orlando Pirates emblem The club was given permission by Jomo Sono to unveil the retired number 10 shirt. These are the players who deserve it according to supporters.
On the dstv Premiership logo table, the Buccaneers are presently ranked third, behind the Brazilians in first place and Stellenbosch FC in second.
In case you missed it, Jomo Sono gave the Orlando Pirates permission to distribute the number 10 jersey, according to the popular X account Football SA.
“Jomo Sono on the Orlando Pirates jersey no.10,” Sono said. “I really don’t have a problem with anyone wearing it at Pirates. To be honest with you, they (Pirates) can give it to anybody they want. The jersey doesn’t play football, it is the player who plays. Back then, it was not the No 10 jersey on Jomo that played, but it was Jomo playing for Pirates wearing jersey No 10,” the great icon added.
“So it’s just that it got stuck with me and everyone believed that I’m the only one who deserves to wear it. When I was playing for Pirates I was just passionate, I just wanted to play football for the team. What number jersey I was wearing didn’t bother me at all.
“But if you ask people who saw me playing for Pirates during my time and you take the jersey and try give it to any of the current players, trust me you will not give it to anyone now. And that’s the answer from me case closed, but it’s up to [Orlando] Pirates to decide who they want to give it to. But for me I haven’t seen anybody who deserves to wear it yet,” Sono concluded.
After reading through the comments, Patrick Maswanganyi and Relebohile Mofokeng are regarded by the majority of Orlando Pirates fans as the two most worthy players.
The 26-year-old Maswanganyi not only contributes eight goals and eight assists but also displays the progressive showboating and conceit that the fans adore. With three goals and four assists, 19-year-old Mofokeng has impressive ability to outmuscle opponents with passes, drop-shoulders, and dribbling.
The legendary Steve Lekoelea was the last player to don the jersey. Later, the jersey was retired since it was believed that Lekoelea was acting impolitely off the field. The number 10 jersey for the Orlando Pirates has been retired for more than 20 years.
